About BKT Radio

Founded in 2020 in Los Angeles, BKT Radio was intentionally built as the platform and launching pad for the evolution of In The Mix With Trent—a show with roots that stretch back nearly two decades.

Long before podcasting became mainstream, In The Mix With Trent began in 2005 as an audio segment hosted on Trent Jackson’s personal blog. What started as raw, unfiltered commentary layered over music and cultural observation quickly developed a loyal following. It wasn’t algorithm-driven. It was voice-driven. Personality-driven. Culture-driven.

BKT Radio was created to give that voice a permanent home.

Built on the foundation of Black Music. Black Culture. Real Radio., BKT exists to restore what traditional radio once provided: intentional curation, textured conversation, and connection through sound. At a time when streaming platforms reduce music to background noise, BKT returns depth and narrative to the listening experience.

The inspiration for the station reaches back even further—to the late 1980s and early 1990s, when music was an experience. For Jackson, it meant spending hours upstairs in his cousin Tuesday’s room, flipping through her vinyl collection and watching her CD library expand as compact discs emerged as brand-new technology. It was there—immersed in New Jack Swing, early ’90s R&B, hip-hop, and slow jams with real bridges and stacked harmonies—that the blueprint was formed.

Music had intention.
DJs had personality.
Radio had feeling.

Rooted in the golden era of Black music—from the mid-’80s through the early 2000s—BKT Radio revives that feeling for a new generation while engaging today’s cultural conversations in real time. The station not only celebrates legacy R&B but also intentionally programs current artists whose sound carries that lineage forward, preserving continuity between eras.

That creative extension now lives beyond the station itself.

Through Songs By Trent, Jackson expands the BKT Radio universe into original music—writing and composing records that reflect the same intentionality, nostalgia, and cultural grounding that define the platform. The lead single, On BKT Radio,” serves as both anthem and statement: a sonic tribute to the era that shaped him and the station he built. Layered with rich harmonies and broadcast-inspired energy, the record captures the spirit of personality-driven radio in musical form.

On BKT Radio” is now available on all streaming platforms.

At its center remains In The Mix With Trent, now fully realized as a flagship broadcast blending humor, commentary, interviews, and musical storytelling. What began as a blog audio experiment in 2005 has matured into a multi-platform media brand—independent, self-curated, and culturally grounded.

BKT Radio is not a playlist.
It is a platform built from legacy, memory, authorship, and ownership.

Black Music. Black Culture. Real Radio.

The Manifesto

BKT Radio believes music is memory.
Music is lineage.
Music is instruction.

We believe radio should have a pulse.
That the DJ should have a point of view.
That conversation should challenge, not just entertain.

We believe in bridges that build emotion.
In harmonies that feel stacked like Sunday morning choirs.
In basslines that move both body and memory.

We believe Black music deserves context.
Black culture deserves authorship.
And Black platforms deserve ownership.

This is not background noise.
This is intention.
